Four

F-1 AND J-2 ENGINES

Five J-2 engines were used on the Saturn V second stage, and one was used on the third stage. They were manufactured by Rocketdyne at Canoga Park in Los Angeles. Acceptance testing took place at Rocketdyne’s Santa Susana Field Laboratory, and this photograph shows the final ever test firing of a J-2, J-2152, on January 2, 1970. This engine was destined for the S-II-15 stage. (70-04809. Arlene Royer [NARA]/Alan Lawrie.)

The F-1 engines were the largest rocket engines ever produced, burning liquid oxygen and RP-1 kerosene. There were 98 flight-standard engines produced, the first 28 having a thrust of 1.5 million pounds and the remaining engines being uprated to 1.522 million pounds. This photograph shows around nine F-1 engines in the Engine Preparation Shop at Canoga Park on March 19, 1965. (65-21185. NASA.)
